Message to the Bowdoin Community — November 14, 2015

Dear students, faculty, and staff,

This week’s very serious incident at Mayflower Apartments has highlighted Bowdoin’s clear response to sexual assault, but as we also know, our response to incidents of bias is not as well-defined. On Friday, I met with the Bias Incident Group—a body historically charged with responding to anonymous incidents of bias, the members of which include students, faculty, staff, and me.

Going forward, the group’s work will focus on establishing policies and procedures for our response to bias incidents. We will engage the campus community in this work and we will institutionalize the result, just as we have with our response at Bowdoin to sexual assault and gender-based violence, academic dishonesty, and other issues.

Sincerely,

Clayton
