To students, faculty, and staff,

I hope you each had a peaceful and joyous holiday season with family and friends.

As you know, today we mark the birth and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This is an opportunity to celebrate his remarkable life and to reflect on the changes his work brought in beginning to dismantle deeply embedded institutions and practices of racism in America.

In the spring of 1964, at the invitation of Bowdoin students, Dr. King brought his civil rights campaign to Bowdoin when he visited our Museum of Art and addressed an overflow crowd of students, faculty, staff, and community members in First Parish Church. By agreement with the King Center in Atlanta, a recording of that talk is, today and through the month of February, available on the Bowdoin website . Please set aside some time to listen to Dr. King, and to consider what each of us can do to continue his unfinished work.
