Message to the Bowdoin Community — January 4, 2017

To the Bowdoin community,

I am very pleased to announce that Matt Orlando has been appointed senior vice president for finance and administration & treasurer at the College, effective immediately.

Matt’s appointment follows an extensive national search—one that attracted a diverse and impressive pool of qualified candidates—and substantial work by the search committee. Matt’s considerable skills, experiences, vision, managerial talents, and partnership approach led to his selection.

Matt, who began serving in this role in an interim capacity last summer, joined the Bowdoin administrative staff as controller in 2006 and was promoted to vice president for finance and assistant treasurer in 2014. A chartered financial analyst (CFA), Matt earned his undergraduate degree in economics Phi Beta Kappa with honors at Trinity College in Hartford, and an MBA at St. Xavier University in Chicago. He previously served as controller and director of budgets at Hamilton College, and as assistant controller and financial analyst at Saint Xavier.

In this role, Matt will serve as a chief advisor on administrative and financial affairs to me, our trustees, and other senior officers. He will be responsible for the management and coordination of all fiscal budgeting, financial reporting, and long-term and master planning, and he will work closely with the Brunswick community, local government, and others at the College to maintain Bowdoin’s strong community relationships. Matt will also oversee multiple administrative functions at the College, including Campus Services, the Children’s Center, the Controller’s Office, Dining and Bowdoin Stores, Events and Summer Programs, Facilities Management, Human Resources, and Safety and Security. Matt will also work closely with Senior Vice President for Investments Paula Volent, who manages our endowment.

I am grateful to the members of our search committee for the care, time, and attention they devoted to this assignment. The result is great for Bowdoin, and I know each of you joins me in congratulating Matt for this well-deserved promotion.

Sincerely,

Clayton
